How Laser Engraving Works
Laser engraving looks a little like magic the first time you see it: a name, a date, or a design appears on a keyring or a tumbler in a matter of minutes, with no ink, no stencil, and no mess. In reality it's a precise and very controllable process. A focused beam of light is guided across the surface of an item, and wherever that beam touches, it removes or alters a very thin layer of material. The result is a mark that becomes part of the object itself, rather than something sitting on top of it, which is exactly why it holds up so well over time.
The Basic Process
Every engraving job starts as a digital design. Whatever you want on your item, whether it's a couple's initials, a graduation date, a company logo, or a favourite quote, is first set up on a computer as a clean, precise image or line of text. This digital file tells the laser exactly where to go, how deep or dark to mark, and where to leave the surface untouched.
Once the design is ready and the item is positioned, the laser gets to work. Guided entirely by the computer, it traces the design point by point and line by line, moving in fine, controlled passes across the surface. Everywhere the beam passes, it either removes a thin layer of material or changes the surface's colour, building up the design a fraction of a millimetre at a time. Because the whole process is computer-controlled, the same design can be repeated exactly the same way every time, which is what makes it possible to engrave detailed text and logos with sharp, consistent results.
What Actually Happens to the Material
Not every laser mark works the same way, and the difference comes down to what happens to the material underneath the beam. With true engraving, the laser actually removes a small amount of material along the design lines, cutting a shallow groove into the surface. Run a fingernail over a deeply engraved cutting board or sign and you can often feel the design, not just see it.
With marking or etching, on the other hand, the laser doesn't remove much material at all. Instead, it changes the colour of the surface, darkening it, lightening it, or altering its finish, so the design shows up as a clear contrast against the surrounding area without cutting into it. Many everyday items, like stainless steel tumblers or anodized metal pieces, are engraved this way, since a change in surface colour is often all that's needed for a crisp, permanent design.
